Ruckus Wireless 802.11ac Access Points and WLAN Controller Options

Ruckus Wireless was founded in 2004 and initially manufactured the MediaFlex line of 802.11b in-home repeater access points. By 2006, Ruckus Wireless had introduced its first 802.11b/g WiFi access point incorporating their patented BeamFlex antenna technology that dramatically improves RF signal and data transmission and reception capabilities. Connect802 became one of the early Ruckus Wireless resellers in 2007 and has continued as a top-tier Ruckus Wireless reseller to bring the Ruckus Wireless 802.11ac Wave 2 WiFi access point's advanced technology to customers across the country.

The Ruckus product portfolio of WiFi, switching, IoT, LTE, software and SaaS lets you deliver a great end-user connectivity experience while reducing the amount of time you spend managing the network. And because Ruckus packs more capability into every network element, you can build that network at a lower cost per connection. Ruckus Wireless 802.11ac access points with patented BeamFlex RF beam-steering engineering provides an enhanced connectivity experience to employees, customers, guests, residents, students, visitors, fans, or subscribers.

Ruckus Cloud WiFi, Ruckus Wireless' cloud-based wireless LAN controller management system provides intuitive cloud-managed simplicity and the SmartZone WLAN control and management software brings unique WLAN management capabilities when enterprise-wide and carrier-network systems are designed.

Ruckus Wireless is the 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless access point and cloud-controller product of choice when Connect802 is specifying and designing high-capacity, maximum performance WiFi network systems. When you buy Ruckus Wireless equipment from Connect802, you’re backed by our rigorous engineering practices and complete Ruckus Wireless WiFi network design, consulting, and support services.

The Ruckus Wireless Unique BeamFlex+ Adaptive Antenna Technology

Ruckus Wireless 802.11ac WiFi access points are uniquely differentiated from other equipment on the market through the patented BeamFlex antenna RF beam steering technology. BeamFlex is a combination of multiple high-gain polarized antenna elements internal to the Ruckus 802.11ac access point coupled with patented software algorithms that are combined in real time to offer an exponential increase in performance. With up to 21 high-gain, directional antenna elements, a BeamFlex smart antenna offers up to 4,200 unique antenna patterns to optimize the reception of a given client.

Ruckus’ Adaptive Antenna Technology also includes BeamFlex+ that increases gain on the uplink, translating into better reception and transmission. BeamFlex+ is based on an RF engineering concept called "Polarization Diversity - Maximum Ratio Combining" (PD-MRC). What this means is that the software in the 802.11ac access point can use both horizontally or vertically polarized antenna elements to transmit and receive (Polarization Diversity) and, on reception, the RF signals obtained from the various antenna elements are algorithmically combined and their RF characteristics are evaluated to create a combined signal representation (Maximum Ratio Combining) that is of higher quality than simply acquiring raw RF energy. BeamFlex+ is particularly advantageous for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices that are hard to hear and constantly change orientation.

Ruckus ZoneDirector Wireless LAN Controller

Locally Deployed Ruckus Wireless LAN Controller Appliance
The Ruckus ZoneDirector Wireless LAN Controller provides the same core management and control features as are found with the Ruckus cloud but with some limitations on report data archiving and the maximum number of access points supported. Ruckus ZoneFlex access points at a single site can be managed through the ZoneDirector and ZoneFlex access points at remote sites (perhaps many miles away) can also be configured (through their local DHCP) to reach out and contact a ZoneDirector (the limitation being that round-trip propagation delay to the remote access point must be under 100ms).

Connect802 will help you evaluate all of the features and capabilities relative to your specific requirements. We'll help you determine whether a ZoneDirector hardware appliance is the right choice for your deployment as compared to a Ruckus Cloud WiFi solution. The key factors are 1) do you have someone on your staff that can manage the hardware and 2) what is the cost break-even point between a ZoneDirector (larger CapEx) and a Ruckus Cloud WiFi solution (larger OpEx).

  • ZoneDirector 1200 scales up to 150 access points and 4,000 client devices
  • ZoneDirector 3000 scales up to 500 access points and 10,000 client devices
  • Hardware is rack-mountable and interfaced through a Gigabit Ethernet connection

Ruckus Smart Positioning Technology (SPoT) Location-Based Analytics

Real-Time Location-Based User Tracking and Analytics
The Ruckus Smart Positioning Technology (SPoT) overlay has two components:
SPoT Point provides real-time location tracking services (RTLS) with client device locations depicted on site floorplans (with an accuracy of between 10 and 30 feet with an 80% accuracy). SPoT Presence uses proximity analytics to detect the overall number of devices located adjacent to the nearest access point.

Implementing Ruckus SPoT location-based services (LBS) provides key data, such as footfall traffic visualization via heat-map by zone, floor, and venue. Ruckus SPoT LBS can be deployed as a cloud-subscription service, or as Virtual SPoT, a virtualized instance of SPoT deployed on-premises or in your data center for a without any recurring costs.

Ruckus P300 Outdoor 802.11ac Point-to-Point/Multipoint Bridge Backhaul Connectivity

The Ruckus P300 is a self-contained, small form-factor outdoor 802.11ac point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless bridge. When you need to extend wireless coverage between buildings, across the street, or provide WiFi service to remote locations in an affordable way the Ruckus P300 is the cost-effective, reliable, and secure choice. The P300 802.11ac wireless point-to-point bridge is the ideal solution when Ethernet cable can't be installed to an adjacent building at a site, under a road, across a parking lot or even in a warehouse or manufacturing facility where cabling isn't practical. In a point-to-multipoint configuration a single P300 can link with up to 10 remotely installed P300 wireless bridges in a hub-and-spoke configuration (with the "root" bridge being on the edge and the other bridges being within the 30-degree antenna beamwidth of the root).

The P300 802.11ac wireless bridge uses Ruckus ChannelFly technology to select the best channel, configure itself, and pair with its partner automatically. The 30-degree beamwidth of the internal directional antenna, and the P300 bridge's sophisticated LED-based aiming feature, means that there's a tremendous cost savings since a Connect802 wireless network engineer is not required on-site to perform exacting antenna aiming and configuration.

For any wireless bridge link, using any RF technology, as you increase the length of the link you decrease the speed of the link. "Longer means slower" because longer propagation distances result in both decreased receive signal strength and increased probability of noise and interference degrading the link. For the Ruckus P300 802.11ac wireless bridge you can expect up to 500 Mbps of actual TCP/IP data throughput across the street dropping to below 250 Mbps as distances approach 2 miles, further dropping to below 100 Mbps as distances approach 5 miles. At the maximum range for the P300 (with standard internal 30-degree sector antennas) the maximum link distance is specified at 7.5 miles. In real-world environments it's unrealistic to expect 7.5 miles.

The Connect802 pre-sales RF engineering team will work with you to set realistic expectations for your wireless point-to-point or point-to-multipoint system and the Connect802 RF design team will be able to prepare a detailed site analysis for your project.
